This piece of wood lay in my parents' attic for several years before I decided what to do with it. The wood had cracked, which almost convinced me to throw the piece away. However I'm glad I held onto it, because those cracks that once seemed like a flaw in the wood have become one of the features of this piece that I enjoy the most. The flowing curves of the outer rings give the piece an organic, natural feel that compliments the newborn baby. Too often I think, we see newborns swaddled in tubes and hospital apparatuses. It's almost as though we've forgotten that natural birth is possible. I am influenced, perhaps, by the fact that I am one of four children born in the very apartment in which I grew up.
