Faux Mosaic: Gaudi-inspired (Carved in October '11)

October 2011: This piece was my first attempt at mosaic relief carving.  I carved a pine board into the shape above and then sanded it down before "tiling" it.  Rather than apply tiles and grout to the surface, I relief-carved the tiles onto the surface by removing the space between the "tiles" .  In other words, the tiles are just the surface of the wood with paint on them.  My wife and I painted each "tile" one by one.  Shellac gives them a shine similar to real ceramic tiles.  

Pine and acrylic.  5'
