Flood scene- Sycamore carving: root carving w/ stone 2012

This piece is based on an album cover design from artist Stanley Donwood. It was also heavily inspired by a book that I recently read (1493, by Charles Mann) and the flooding of my own home in 2011.  The book, 1493, discusses how the introduction of the sweet potato in China led to a steep rise in farming in previously un-farmed areas, the result of which was the deforestation of the land and eventually significant erosion and flooding.  The book made me wonder about other impacts that we as humans have on the planet (and consequently on our own lives) without even understanding what we've done or how we've affected our world.
The carving features three different materials: sycamore root, cow bone, and a small part of a burl (probably silver maple).   The different parts have been carved to fit and then glued together.
