This piece was originally one of two parts of a usable hame (a piece of farm equipment that helps secure a padded collar to a horse (or other beast). A neighbor of my parents had it hanging in his barn and donated it for carving purposes.
The slots at this end of the hame would have had adjustable leather straps going through them to attach to the animal harness. In addition, the original hame had only three such slots; the fourth is added as part of the design.
