Owl clock: faux mosaic, acrylic on cherry 2012

Original design and painting by Emily Worsnopp.  Carved using cherry wood by Will Worsnopp.
Owls are a common theme in many mediiums, but it wasn't until I tried carving one that I truly appreciated an owl's features.  The eyes and beak are the most unmistakable characteristics, and most owls are shown from the front view, presenting a very flat, two dimensional "face".  In carving this owl, abstract though it may be, I came to appreciate the depth of the owl's face and the degree to which the owl's true body shape is hidden under fluff and feather.
