Air plant holder:

Recently I have tried to create some carvings that would serve as air plant holders.  Air plants are plants that don't require soil.  Instead, they grow without rooting to the ground, and they pull moisture from the air to survive.  I water them once a week by soaking them, and they live happily nestled into nooks and crannies of my carvings.
What initially inspired me to create carvings that would hold air plants is that I had a couple of river roots that were fantastic specimens, but were completely rotten through the center.  When I carved them, I ended up with the hollowed out shell of a very nice piece of wood.  Unsure of how to use these mostly rotted pieces, I decided to put air plants in them.  The plants transformed what I thought were some unimpressive pieces into something far superior.  This most recent piece does not have any of the rot issues of the original material, but it is intended to hold air plants and a small orchid.  The design of the carving itself is based on "zentangle" designs that I carved into the root.
